What Is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma, also known as rosacea sub-type 3 and, colloquially, whiskey nose and rum nose, is an advanced form of rosacea which primarily affects men over the age of 50. The severity of rhinophyma can vary dramatically, from only a slight enlargement of the nose to extreme levels of swelling and disfigurement.

How To Treat Rhinophyma

For more advanced forms of rhinophyma, surgery remains the most viable treatment option in order to remove excess flesh caused by the swelling of the sebaceous glands. However, topical creams and other forms of over-the-counter rosacea medication can be effective in reducing some of the symptoms.

The most common symptoms of rhinophyma, including redness and lumps under the surface of the skin, can be treated using our all-natural treatments listed above. While these treatments will not eliminate the swelling of rosacea, it has helped sufferers restore the smoothness of their skin and return their nose to a more normal colour.

Of the four different sub-types of rosacea, the symptoms of rhinophyma are by far the most easy to identify. This is because the enlargement of the nose is evident straightaway.

If you have rhinophyma, you could display any of the following symptoms:

  • Enlarged bulbous nose,
  • Visible broken blood vessels,
  • Lumps and bumps under the surface of the skin,
  • Redness across the nose,
  • Craggy feel of the skin, said to feel like orange peel at an early stage,
  • Breathing difficulties through the nose.

Rhinophyma Causes

There is no clear-cut answer as to what exactly causes the rosacea condition, and rhinophyma is no different. The reasons behind why the nose swells is an easier question to answer though, given that the swelling is a direct consequence of the enlargement of the sebaceous glands. This is thought to be linked to an over-production of sebum, the oily substance that the sebaceous glands produce.

An over-abundance of demodex mites could also be linked to rhinophyma, just as they are to acne rosacea. They tend to be more plentiful on more oily skin, although there is no direct proof that they cause rhinophyma.

What Do We Recommend?

As stated previously, in order to completely eradicate the swelling of rhinophyma, surgery may well be required. Having said this, even after surgery the condition is not “cured,” just temporarily minimised. We at Finca offer a less invasive all-natural alternative to help keep your symptoms in check.

We would recommend the treatment plan featured in our rhinophyma bundle below, to help both reduce redness and lumpiness, as well as restore equilibrium to your gut which is intrinsically linked to the condition of your skin.
